Manchester City‘s record goalscorer Sergio Aguero has confirmed the club’s statue in his honour will be unveiled in May – a decade on from his famous last-minute winner.
The Premier League giants revealed they would erect a statue at the Etihad Stadium as a tribute to their greatest-ever striker when they confirmed his departure last March.
And now Aguero has revealed the work will be completed in three months’ time, telling TYC Sports: ‘The statue in Manchester City will be ready in May.’
That month will mark 10 years since the Argentine struck the dramatic last-minute winner against QPR to win City their first league title since 1968 on the final day of his debut season in England.
The former striker, who had to call time on his career after being diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia in December following his summer switch to Barcelona, is a City legend after his famous strike in their 3-2 win over QPR on May 13, 2012.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told Aguero the plans for him to be immortalised at the Etihad Stadium over the phone last year after the club commissioned a statue to mark his achievements.
Aguero’s figure will stand alongside those of fellow club greats Vincent Kompany and David Silva, which were unveiled last summer. The trio are viewed as symbolising the strides taken under managers Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Guardiola over the past decade.
The current statues, illuminated by blue-tinted lighting at night, were created by award-winning sculptor Andy Scott and have been constructed using thousands of welded pieces of galvanised steel.
‘Sergio’s contribution to Manchester City over the last 10 years cannot be overstated,’ said Al Mubarak at the time.
‘His legend will be indelibly etched into the memories of everyone who loves the club and maybe even in those who simply love football.’
Aguero scored a staggering 260 goals in 390 appearances in 10 years at City, winning five Premier League titles in the process.
