Watford striker, Emmanuel Dennis, has met with Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) bosses as the Super Eagles look to improve their chances of World Cup qualification.
Dennis was called up to represent Nigeria at this year’s African Cup of Nations, but a dispute over the timing of his call up resulted in him staying in England with Watford instead.
The striker has not represented his nation since November 2020 and was not part of former manager Gernot Rohr’s plans, despite impressing earlier this season.
After Rohr was sacked shortly before the beginning of the tournament, his replacement Augustine Eguavoen attempted to include Dennis in his squad for the competition, but it never materialised.
Including Dennis in the meeting, which was also attended by Watford players William Troost-Ekong, Samuel Kalu and Peter Etebo, is an attempt from the NFF to build a bridge that looked to have been previously burnt due to Rohr’s continued decision to overlook the forward.
Whether or not it has worked will become clearer next month when Nigeria names their squad for two World Cup qualifier matches against Ghana.
NFF president Amaju Pinnick described the meetings as a chance to have “clear the air” talks and said he did not want Nigeria to simply be “making up the numbers” at the World Cup this winter.
