Nigeria Begins Preparations For Africa Junior Handball Championship

Nigeria will play in Group B of the 28th Women’s Junior Africa Nations Championship slated to hold in Conakry, Guinea from February 19-26, 2022.

The National U-20 female handball will play host, Guinea, Algeria and Gambia at the biennial championship organized by the Confederation of Africa Handball (CAHB) that is a qualifier for the World Women Junior Handball Championship.

The U-20 female team has commenced preparation already ahead of the championship with 16 players in camp undergoing intensive training at the Aguiyi Ironsi Military Cantonment, Abuja.

Coach of the team, Bukola Duru, revealed that the players who are expected to join the team in the coming days had examinations in their schools, stressing that was why they were yet to hit the camp.

She also said the players are passionate and understand the importance of the championship and are ready to make Nigeria proud.

“We have 16 players in camp ahead of the championship and they are in high spirit. Others will join in the coming days after their school examinations and then we will have a robust camping ahead of the championship,” Dudu concluded.

The Africa Women Junior Handball Championship that was to hold in September 2021 was postponed indefinitely by the Confederation of Africa Handball (CAHB) will now hold from February 19-26 this year.

Nigeria has participated in seven editions of the Africa Women Junior handball Championship, hosting the first and third editions in Lagos and Bauchi respectively.

Nigeria has won the championship thrice in 1986 in Algeria, 1988 in Tunisia and 1990 in Egypt.

The last time Nigeria participated in the championship was 16 years ago after the 2006 edition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
