Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, is full of regrets for his disgraceful dismissal against Tunisia in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Iwobi was on Sunday night sent off in Nigeria’s 0-1 loss to Tunisia following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. As a result of this, he has so far received threats on various social media platforms from embittered Nigerians, who frowned at his exit.
The Everton midfielder, who was shown red card few minutes after replacing Kelechi Iheanacho in the second half, took to his verified Instagram handle to pen an emotional farewell before jetting to his base in England.
Going by his message, the erstwhile Arsenal player revealed that the African soccer showpiece to him, turned from joy to sorrow. He however apologised to Nigerians, urging them to overlook his shortcomings.
“Moment of joy can quickly turn into pain and anguish. As much as it’s part of football, we came for more. Our fans, that shared this moment with us, both in Cameroon and across the world, deserved more! The beauty of the game is the next moment of jubilation is never too far round the corner. We will be back to fight for our nation, stronger. We owe it to you, and I owe it to myself. Thank you all for the word of support and encouragement. It doesn’t go unnoticed,” he wrote.
