Chiefs Call On Simba To Be 'Professional' Ahead Of Tie

Kaizer Chiefs have sent a tacit warning to CAF Champions League opponents Simba SC from Tanzania not to 'cook the books' when it comes to pre-match COVID-19 testing of players ahead of the second leg of their quarterfinal tie.

Chiefs are leading 4-0 from the home leg, but have travelled with a strong squad to ensure they complete the job in Dar es salaam. And they say they do not expect any of their players to test positive for COVID-19 having had a clean bill of health when leaving South Africa.

“As required by the rules of CAF, the team will be expected to test once again in Dar es Salaam ahead of the game, and we are confident that we will receive an all clear as it has been with all our travels to other countries, including Angola, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Cameroon,” Chiefs said in a statement on the club’s website.

“We have noted with concern some reports and murmurings about tampering with results but believe that we will not experience anything of that nature from the Tanzanian authorities.

“Simba, like the other teams that have visited us for our home games, received professional and hospitable treatment and we hope the Tanzanians will return the favour.

“In the spirit of fair play, football is a game that’s played on the pitch and the results should be determined on the pitch.”

Sudanese side Al Merrikh accused Simba of foul play earlier in the competition when eight of their players tested positive ahead of a home game for the latter in March. Simba won the match 3-0 and the Confederation of African Football later exonerated them of any wrong-doing.
