European Golden Shoe: Which Africans Are In The Hunt?

Which of the continent’s stars are in the running for the prestigious goalscoring prize?

#15 Gael Kakuta | Lens | 11 goals (22 points)

Ex-Chelsea wonderkid Gael Kakuta is enjoying one his best-ever goalscoring seasons this term in Ligue 1 and has been an inspirational force with 11 goals for Lens.

#14 Silas Wamangituka | Stuttgart | 11 goals (22)

Having chipped in with his fair share of goals in Stuttgart's promotion season, Silas Wamangituka has shown little difficulty with the step up to the Bundesliga in 2020-21.

The former Paris FC attacker has adapted well to life in Germany although injury has ended his campaign prematurely.

#13 Amine Gouiri | Nice | 12 goals (24)

The Franco-Algerian wonderkid has been in top form for Nice, recently netting his 10th goal of the season in a 2-1 victory against Rennes.

#12 Karl Toko Ekambi | Lyon | 12 goals (24)

Cameroon international Karl Toko Ekambi has never forged a reputation as prolific, but he is enjoying the 2020-21 season at Lyon and will be hoping to carry his form to the end of the campaign.

#11 Andy Delort | Montpellier | 12 goals (24)

Algeria's Andy Delort has been a bright spark for the Ligue 1 side this season.

At 29, he's in his prime, and he could yet eclipse his career-best tally of 14 (with Montpellier in 2018-19).

#10 Ludovic Ajorque | Strasbourg | 13 goals (26)

Strasbourg forward Ludovic Ajorque is enjoying his best ever season in Ligue 1, cracking double figures in the goal charts.

The Franco-Malagasy forward will be eager to continue that form throughout the season.

#9 Terem Moffi | Lorient | 14 goals (28)

Nigerian striker Terem Moffi's form in Ligue 1 for Lorient has been so impressive that he is reportedly now on the radar of some of Europe's top clubs.

He's yet to make his bow with the Super Eagles, but after his hat-trick against Bordeaux at the weekend, it's surely only a matter of time.

#8 Boulaye Dia | Reims | 14 goals (28)

Having established himself as a key player for Reims in 2019-20, Dia is enjoying his best season ever at the club and will be aiming to hit the high teens in the goal charts.

He's also been tipped with a move to the Premier League - and specifically Arsenal - this summer.

#7 Youssef El Arabi | Olympiakos | 20 goals (30 points)

Another striker impressing outside one of Europe's five major leagues, El Arabi has scored 20 goals for Greek giants Olympiakos so far this term.

Unfortunately for the forward, however, he's lost his record as the top scoring Moroccan player in La Liga to Youssef En-Nesyri this season.

#6 Aaron Boupendza | Hatayspor | 21 goals (31.5 points)

Surpisingly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn't the top ranked Gabon striker in this list, having been eclipsed by his compatriot this term.

Boupendza, who has impressed for the national team as well, has been tearing it up in Turkey with 21 goals to date.

#5 Youssef En-Nesyri | Sevilla | 17 goals (34)

A key player for Sevilla, En-Nesyri wasted little time in breaking into double figures.

He's reportedly being tracked by West Ham United ahead of a potential summer swoop.

#4 Patson Daka | RB Salzburg | 24 goals (36)

Breath-taking performances in the Austrian top flight with Salzburg, Daka has continued his inexorable rise to one of Europe's big leagues this term.

He's surely destined for the top, but who will take the plunge on the frontman this summer?

  1. Simy | Crotone | 19 goals (38)

    #3 Simy | Crotone | 19 goals (38)

Having hit 20 goals in Serie B last season, Simy hit the ground running in Serie A with Crotone and finds himself a contender for top scorer.

Unfortunately, despite his eye-catching haul, Crotone have only won five matches so far this term, and are destined for the second tier.

  2. Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | 20 goals (40)

    #2 Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | 20 goals (40)

Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah has been forced to share the goals with Sadio Mane in recent seasons, but the Egyptian remains a terrific threat and will be aiming to surpass a century of league goals for the Reds this season.

Despite Liverpool's troubles across 2020-21, Salah has struck 20 goals and is on course to beat his Golden Boot-winng tally of 22 in 2018-19.

  3. Paul Onuachu | Genk | 25 goals (50)

    #1 Paul Onuachu | Genk | 25 goals (50)

The towering Nigeria striker enjoyed a magnificent goalscoring campaign with Genk, and also recently netted the winner for the Super Eagles in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying victory over Benin.
